More than 75 years ago, PIA’s founding agencies wisely structured a participatory democracy to quickly respond to members’ interests, rather than a “benevolent bureaucracy” that would be distant from the membership, and the voice of the professional independent agent was born. The organization was called the Ohio Association of Mutual Insurance Agents. The first Congress of Agents convened in 1933 and established the governance model and founding principles of the new organization. In 1976, the organization became Professional Insurance Agents Association of Ohio as it continued to evolve and reflect the changing face and vision of the membership.

The ideals of the founding agents carry on. Members come together through PIA to share ideas and knowledge which are integral to their careers and livelihood. Educational resources support the growth of new members while enhancing the operational strength of existing members. A unified voice comes together for business and industry issues. The advantages of cooperative participation were used to forge strong relationships with product and service providers. These connections add essential revenue and cost control options.

If the first Congress of Agents could see our association today, they would be proud. Their wisdom has led to the creation of the largest independent insurance agent association in Ohio with more than 14,000 members working toward the same goals and objectives.
